BILE ACIDS-PRE AND POST PRANDIAL-CANINE/FELINE
This test is for the assessment of hepatic functional capacity in dogs and cat. Functional hepatic impairment many occur in animals with no elevation in hepatic enzyme activities, e.g. in porto-systemic shunting, for which this test is the diagnostic procedure of choice.
Protocol
Fast the animal for 12 hours.
Collect 2ml blood into plain tube (no anticoagulant).
Feed the animal a small meal of their usual diet: just enough so the patient will clear the bowl at one go. If the animal is anorexic, syringe feeding with a commercial liquid concentrate food is acceptable. Feed the amount recommended for the patient's body weight.
Collect a second 2ml blood sample two hours after the meal is finished, again putting the sample into a plain blood tube.
Separate serum if possible, label samples "pre" and "post prandial" and dispatch to the laboratory.
Note
Heparinised or EDTA blood/plasma samples are NOT suitable for bile acid estimations.

FAT (LONG CHAIN TRIGLYCERIDE) ABSORPTION TEST
The fat absorption test is used as an indicator of fat absorption in the small intestine.
Protocol
Fast the dog for > 12 hours.
Collect a basal 2ml sample of clotted or heparinised blood.
Give corn oil (e.g. Mazola) at 3ml/kg body weight.
Collect a second 2ml sample of clotted or heparinised blood 3 hours after feeding.
Separate the serum/plasma if possible, label the samples "pre" and "post corn oil" and dispatch to the laboratory.
Interpretation
In normal dogs the level of triglycerides is expected to double.
